The Vibe

“It is not enough to conquer; one must learn to seduce” (Voltaire, 1694-1778) is the tag line of this new champagne and cigar bar situated close to Blackfriars bridge. The French philosopher is referenced throughout your experience here, including menus littered with terribly profound quotes. The place is fun, albeit a novelty; I mean who doesn’t like sipping on bubbles and smoking cigars whilst reading philosophy? As the Square Mile’s newest luxury drinking hole it is frivolous and expensive, a place to wow a date that likes to drink in shiny joints. The bar is nestled in the basement of a glorious Grade II listed building that was formerly a palace, a prison and a bank. The interior is inspired by its heritage, with luxury booths and slick lighting. Stone vaults outside on the cool terrace which used to be holding cells for the prisoners, have now been transformed into cosy little snugs with big sofas and cushions, perfect for hiding away from the crowds. You get a very VIP feel in Voltaire, however, with it being in the city it’s likely to attract a lot of suits. In the West End, it would reach great dating heights. Having said that, if you work in the area, it would be perfect for an after work date that turns wild.

The Order

You can’t come to a champagne and cigar bar and not try both.  For one night imagine you are Winston Churchill, Groucho Marx, Che Guevera, Alfred Hitchcock, or, if feeling particularly fruity, Fidel Castro. An esteemed list of famous stogie smokers and for one night only you can be amongst them puffing away on a cohiba. They have a wonderful selection of cigars, so try and pretend to know what you’re talking about to impress your date. Whatever you do, don’t inhale. Coughing all over your date is embarrassing and painful. They also have an exclusive champagne list with a lot on there (perhaps too much?) so stick to the champagne cocktails to keep it simple and the prices down. Highly recommended is the Pomme-Colada.

The Game

Choose Voltaire if you want to do something different and you’re bored of generic wine bars and cocktail bars. You’ll have a lot of fun. The atmosphere is bubbly like the champagne and the music will have you dancing till you make your move.  It could be just the place to break through some of that awkwardness that goes with dating if early on in the relationship, thanks to a big helping hand from the drinks list. If you’re a cigar smoker, fine, act like a pro but don’t be a douche- pretension is an infallible turn off.  It goes without saying you should make sure your date is comfortable with smoking, as you’ll probably be spending a lot of time outside with your stogie. The choice of venue would backfire enormously if not. Keep the champagne flowing and see what happens.

The Faults

Voltaire is pricey, but then what do you expect from a bar specialising in two notoriously expensive commodities. The city location could put people off, but afterwards when you are suitably full of champagne, a walk along the Thames romantically caps off the evening.

Sex Factor

2. Post-work drinks could get wild but this is not the weekend so better to make sure you get up for work.
