The Vibe

Shebeen is an intimate speakeasy in Kentish Town. The name is Irish and means ‘a small place where liquor is sold illegally’. Although this venue is 100% legal, it has an illicit feel to it thanks to its low lighting and private booths moulded out of former prison cells (this being the site of a former Victorian police station). The prohibition style decor, sultry music and scattered candles lend it a casual sexiness, ideal for weeknight dating.

The Game

This is the kind of place you want to be in while the rest of London is asleep, so book late or come here after supper (there is a restaurant, Kentish Canteen upstairs), and ensure you have no meetings at work the next morning. Call ahead to reserve a private booth. Don’t tell your date too much about the venue, keep it a wonderful surprise.

The Order

Cocktails. They are all divine and priced as though it was still 1998 (£6.50 per cocktail, with two for one from 5.30pm-7.30pm every night). The speciality here is poitin, a highly alcoholic irish beverage (only recently been made legal) which features in several innocuous sounding drinks such as ‘Sweet Molly Malone’. Suitable for brave types, or for those wishing to block out memories of a truly dire date. Order trays of delicious meat, cheese and bread to soak up the alcohol if necessary.

The Faults

Shebeen is hard to fault. The location might be a bit of a nightmare if your postcode doesn’t begin with an N.

Sex Factor

4. Sexy and intimate, with addictive cocktails and private booths to shield you from the rest of humanity. You would struggle not to make it happen here.
